Hook & Hall Solid State Physics is readable and at about the right level, but it doesn't cover everything. Ashcroft & Mermin Solid State Physics is a useful but more advanced text for anyone who requires more depth, especially for the quantum mechanics of electrons in solids. Lecture notes (PDF) are an on-going project. Check back occasionally I've been working through Ashcroft and Mermin to review some aspects of solid state physics and I think problem 4 in chapter 13 might have a misprint.
